A COUPLE jailed for killing their adoptive son by poisoning him with salt, have insisted they are innocent.

From their prison cells, where they are each serving a five-year sentence, Ian and Angela Gay told how they are still stunned at being convicted of the manslaughter of three-year-old Christian Blewitt, and claim they have "no idea" how he died.

Their pleas of innocence come a day after a pathologist who gave evidence at the trial said he believed there might have been a miscarriage of justice.

The Evening News reported yesterday how Dr Peter Acland, who carried out the post mortem, said there was "significant medical doubt" over their prosecution.

Now the couple, who lived in Bromsgrove, have told of their anguish.

In a letter to her brother Carl, Angela Gay wrote: "I just want to come home. I shouldn't be here. I don't belong here.

"Me and Ian are good people and totally innocent."

Young Christian died five weeks into a 13-week trial placement with the couple.
