INDY 90s pop idols The Wonderstuff have offered to play a one-off fundraising concert after hearing about the plight of a Redditch and Bromsgrove diving club caught up in the tsunami disaster.

The Millennium Dive Centre wants to raise £50,000 to help the villagers at the the Sri Lankan resort of Hikkaduwa who gave the divers shelter and food after the area was devastated.

The dive club made appeals on radio and TV for donations from the public and moved by the pleas, members of The Wonderstuff phoned appeal co-ordinators and offered to play a private party for 100 lucky donators.

Diving club member Michelle Mills said: "We've done really well so far and have raised more than £20,000 but when members of The Wonderstuff called us and made this offer, we simply couldn't believe it.

"It is wonderful they are willing to give up their time to help in this way.

"Personal invites will be given on a first come, first served basis to 100 people who make a donation of £25 or over.

"The party will be held at South Bromsgrove High School on February 5 from 7pm."

Anyone who would like to make a donation so the Millennium Dive Centre can help support its friends on Hikkaduwa can call 07748 755360 or 0121 445 2033. Anyone interested can also visit www.hikkaduwavillagefund.org for more details.

Last week, Studley High School held a fund-raising rock concert for the diving club's appeal. The Crooks Lane school has set itself a target of £11,000 to raise.

Topping the bill during the event, which featured bands from the high school and Kingsley College, were Montana, who recently toured with Ocean Colour Scene.

Other fund-raising events at the school included sponge throwing which left the teachers soaked and a bring-and-buy sale.

Nearly £2,000 was raised in all.
