WORCESTER Rugby Club look set to expand their coaching team next season with a move for Billy McGinty.

The 39-year-old, who worked as a defensive coach last season, has been lined up with a return to Sixways to work in the Premiership.

The National One leaders, who will be promoted on Saturday if they beat Bristol Shoguns, want a new man to work on the analytical side and McGinty fits the bill.

The former Wigan rugby league star, who represented Great Britain four times, won two Challenge Cups, two Regal Trophies, Premiership and league championships as well as the small matter of two World Club Championships, made a big impression with John Brain and Andy Keast last year.

And with the duo eager to concentrate on coaching next season in the Premiership, a move for McGinty to work on game analysis and individual skill coaching with players suits all parties.

"There is a possibility that we could be looking at additional coaching resources because, in the performance analysis area, we really have to get that right next season if we are promoted," said Brain.

Worcester's director of rugby is also keen to consolidate his existing coaching structure with fitness coach Phil Richards also looking set for a new deal.

Brain and coach Keast signed new two-year contracts last week and Richards, who has made a big impact this season, is ready to pen a fresh deal.

"We'll be sitting down with Phil soon to talk about the deal," added Brain.

"We want him to stay and Phil is keen to stay at Worcester so I don't envisage a problem there.

"Obviously we are keen to keep the continuity of coaching here at Sixways."

Meanwhile, the National One trophy will not be presented to Worcester on Saturday even if they do beat Bristol.

Instead, the trophy will be on show at the final game of the season at Sixways against Pertemps Bees on April 24.

The Rugby Football Union wants Worcester to pass the Premiership entry criteria before any trophy is presented as, if they do not, they would be docked enough points to make the second-placed side champions.

An RFU audit will take place on Monday but Worcester are certain that there will be no last-minute hitches to spoil the promotion party.
