MALVERN Rugby Club sent a message to other Midlands Two West teams with an 81-0 demolition of Nuneaton Old Edwardians on Saturday at Spring lane.

Malvern sit at the top of the league table alongside the only other unbeaten team in the division Burton.

A satisfied director of rugby David Robins said: "We have been promising a big score and this was the day for it. You have to capitalise against weak defensive sides and our plan was to go out there and show no mercy, although, to their credit, the Nuneaton lads never gave up.

"This season has a long way to go and it was important to build up as big a points difference as possible with so many big games yet to come. The pack was magnificent to a man, our defence was sound and the ball retention was excellent. It's difficult to single out players, but one of the great successes has been John Drage, who worked hard on his fitness through the summer to force himself into the first team reckoning.

"Our only problem is that we have so many in the squad competing for places that some are bound to be disappointed, but the spirit is so good that they can accept it. We need the strength in depth as there are always injuries and non-availabilities to counter as the season goes on.

"The next game is our biggest test to date, away at Aston Old Edwardians. They pipped us twice last year and our lads were disappointed with the way they played in the North Midlands Cup final, so they will be pumped up for Saturday (tomorrow)."
