WORCESTER City manager John Barton insists more players may have to leave St George's Lane following the release of Allan Davies.

The 32-year-old full-back has left City to join UniBond Division One leaders Ilkeston Town after Barton was ordered to reduce the playing budget which had gone beyond its limit.

Davies was signed by Barton from Burton Albion in 2001 and went on to make 145 appearances for the club.

He made his last start for City last Saturday in the FA Cup second qualifying round defeat to Cambridge City.

Barton said: "Allan has done nothing but carry out his job in a very professional manner since he joined City.

"His injury at the end of the last season was very unfortunate and he has struggled a little bit with Gilmore's groin. I'm sure he will do a very good job at his future club and we all wish him the best of luck.

"It's not an easy decision and it's the hardest part of the game. But I've talked about having to trim the wage budget and this is the first stage.

"I may have to make a similar decision again soon."

Davies will now make his Ilkeston debut against Woodley Sports in the FA Trophy tomorrow. Ilkeston are managed by former City and Hereford United striker Phil Stant.
