A Range of events to highlight global poverty and injustice will take place in Malvern.

Meetings, talks and church services will feature during One World Week, from October 17-24.

Churches together in Malvern and the Malvern Fairtrade Group are doing their part to raise awareness of international issues.

The programme begins at the Baptist Church, on Abbey Road, at 7pm on Monday, October 18, with a talk on poverty, debt and Fairtrade by Gracewell Mwansa.

Mr Mwansa, who is now living in Britain, worked in the copper mines of Zambia for 29 years and is pioneering various development programmes.

A women's meeting, featuring prayers and readings on the One World theme will take place at 3pm on Tuesday, October 19, at Lansdowne Crescent Methodist Church.

Business owners in the area are being invited to a Fairtrade introduction day on Thursday, October 21, at the Training Station on Great Malvern Station, from 2.30pm to 5pm.

Visitors can learn about the range of products on offer and the benefits of selling Fairtrade goods.

On Friday, October 22, there will be a short service at the United Reformed Church in Malvern Link. Rev Elizabeth Welch will take communion at 10.30am, followed by a sale of Fairtrade goods and charity Christmas cards.

Malvern Development Education Centre will hold an open day on Saturday, October 16, in conjunction with the event.

The premises, at the back of the Oxfam Shop in Church Street, will be open from 10am-4pm.

Local One World spokesman Mary Wetherall said: "One World Week gives people a chance to come along and see what is happening in the world and how they can help.

"It doesn't just involve Third World countries, there are also issues at home that need looking at.

"It's not only funding that helps, it's making your voice heard. People power makes a big difference, but unless people know about things, they can't do anything."
