West Malvern's newly formed drama group has got off to a flying start. Barely a month after its formation, it now meets weekly at the Brewers Arms for readings and rehearsals (and a drink afterwards). Its first event, on Friday, November 12, will be a spooky evening at the pub, with ghost stories, readings and poetry, black costumes, weird make-up, pumpkins and candles. Anyone is welcome.

The group - lamentably entitled the Brewers' Troupe - have already begun casting and rehearsals for their first production, planned to take place at the village hall after Christmas. This will be Daisy Pulls It Off by Denise Deegan, set in a girls' boarding school. The preponderance of female roles has made it necessary to cast men as women for one or two of the key parts (which should be interesting), and there is still a need for more 'schoolgirls'. For more details, call Kate Wheaton on 567411.

Despite indifferent weather, Saturday's Cricket Club mini-market, also at the Brewers' Arms, raised nearly £600 for club funds. The main cash prizes in the grand raffle (£100-£50-£25) went to visitors from as far afield as Worcester and Kenilworth, but there should be some fragrant locals around - minor prizewinners included Dave Cantrell (Dior aftershave), Tony Poyner (Optimism perfume)and Liz Spencer (Tweed perfume set)! The club will be also holding the first of its four winter quizzes next Saturday, October 16 at the village hall - questions devised by Bob and Valerie Blackbourn, and posed by Resident question-master Andy Dakin. Reminders of this weekend's events: tomorrow (Saturday) night's harvest supper and entertainment in the village hall - bring food to share - details from Rosmary Herbert on 572497; the harvest thanksgiving services in St James's Church at 10.30am and 6.30pm on Sunday.
