THE lights are out at a Droitwich community centre, which desperately needs funds to pay for vital electrical repairs.

The Westlands Community Forum cannot provide all the services it wants because the community hall needs new lights and it cannot meet the costs.

The forum has obtained quotes of between £2,300 and £10,000 to carry out the repairs and a local resident has offered the services of his son's electrical firm to carry out the work.

Now the forum is in the process of organising a host of fund-raising events to generate some cash.

Secretary of the forum Amanda Edge said: "One room has got no electrics at all so we really need to get some put in and we need to update the electrics in the rest of the hall.

"We're still waiting to hear what the quote will be but we have already started our fund-raising."

The forum held a jumble sale on Saturday and the youth service will be holding a car wash at Homebase on Saturday, October 16.

It is also looking into the possibility of obtaining a grant from either Worcestershire County or Wychavon District councils.

Droitwich Spa Amateur Boxing Club is waiting to move into the hall in Farmers Way while a new £850,000 training suite is built in Kidderminster Road.

But it cannot move into the hall until the lights have been sorted.

Mrs Edge said: "We want to get this sorted out as soon as possible really.

"We know the boxing club are desperate to move in, but that is the room where there is no electric at all, so any help with fund-raising or grants would be greatly appreciated.

"It is a vital community facility and we want it to continue to be used by everyone."

A coffee morning is held at the hall every Wednesday morning from 9.30am to 11.30am.
