THE adage all good things come to those who wait rang true for Kidderminster Carolians as they hauled themselves off the bottom of Midlands Three West (North).

KCs were good value for their first points of the season after bouncing back from four straight league and cup defeats to see off Shrewsbury 25-18.

The victory lifts the Marlpool Lane men to third from bottom above Willenhall and Sutton Coldfield and level on points with Saturday's opponents Shrewsbury.

A constantly changing XV worked hard for the whole game and displayed enough signs to hint that brighter days lie ahead for director of rugby Phil Knowles and co.

KCs were given a let off when Shrewsbury fly half Mattie Morris missed a first minute penalty and the hosts opened the scoring when skipper Eddie Ross outstripped the defence to score in the corner.

Within four minutes they were 10-0 up when Matt Poole touched down following good forward play close to the visitors line.

KCs were looking more like their old selves and were running some nice moves.

Shrewsbury came into the match and Morris kicked two penalties in the 15th and 22nd minutes to reduce the deficit to 10-6.

The visitors edged in front four minutes from half-time when Morris converted a try scored by Rawson Dean.

The opening period ended with KCs trailing 13-10, but things were looking better than they had all season. Within two minutes of the restart, KCs went back into the lead with a try. Some good rugby took the ball out to the left and stand-off Iain Crockett crossed the line to put them 15-13 up.

Shrewsbury used their weight to their advantage, but there was some good tackling by KCs, and in particular by Ben Turner who had a superb game at prop.

Although tackling has been Kidderminster's weakness, there was a vast improvement in this match. KCs were in determined mood and in the 62nd minute, good work by the forwards produced their fourth try.

The scorer was Matt Rigsby and the players looked overjoyed as they increased their lead to 20-13.

Winger Andy Webber, centre Dan Quinn and scrum half Leon Toms all played well, and Webber was rewarded with a try two minutes later after showing Shrewsbury a clean pair of heels.

Kidderminster fowards Paul Warman and hooker Chris Jones played a vital part in the game, but it has to be rated as a very good team performance.

It was a pity that Shrewsbury were allowed to score a try through Steve O'Hara five minutes from time, because it put KCs under a lot of pressure but they held out for the win.

On Saturday, they travel to Telford for the fourth game out of five against Shropshire opposition looking for a repeat of last weekend's result and two more valuable league points.
