A SECOND Wyre Forest animal lover has warned that horses and their riders are at risk of being killed by runaway cars crashing off roads and into fields.

Tracey Smith said lives were in danger at land off Lickhill Stables in Lickhill Road, Stourport, after a car came through a hedge and rolled over on Friday.

Echoing fears made by a fellow horse owner over cars leaving the A442 Bridgnorth Road, Mrs Smith said the 5.45pm accident would not be the last.

Nobody was injured in the accident, which involved a red Vauxhall Cavalier.

She said: "Somebody is going to get killed. Luckily, the horses had just been brought in. God knows what would have happened if the horses were in there."

The resident of Bewdley Road, Stourport said highways bosses must erect warning signs or a steel barrier to prevent the accidents.

Stable owner Sean Carpenter said it was the third time a vehicle had gone through the hedge since July 2003.

He said: "The car could have hit a horse or person. My kids go out there. If nothing is done then somebody will get hurt."

He said the road was also a danger to horse riders - Mrs Smith called it a "nightmare" - and a horse and rider sign should be erected to warn traffic.

The warnings echoed comments made in the Shuttle/Times & News by horse breeder Lyn Phillips who said she feared her horses would be hit by cars which fail to navigate a bend on the A442 Brignorth Road.

No-one was available for comment at the Wyre Forest Highways Partnership Unit at Worcestershire County Council, which deals with highway matters in the district.
