A NATURALLY talented golfer has his sights set on the big time after going from strength in the sport.

At just 15-years-old, James Newman has a whole host of titles to his name as well as many county appearances for both the U16s and U18s.

And now he wants to cut his five handicap to scratch and follow in the footsteps of Ian Poulter and Ryder Cup star Sergio Garcia by making it as a professional.

The Droitwich Spa High School student, who first picked up a club at the age of eight and won the Perdiswell Golf Club championship aged 12, has really seen his young career take off.

Since August last year he has won no less than five competitions, including the 36-hole club knockout at Droitwich Golf Club after eight rounds last month.

He was also runner-up in August's Gaudet Luce Golf Club Open and has been selected for the Worcestershire U16s and, despite his age, U18s sides.

His father Paul, who himself has a handicap of six, said: "His ambition is to attend a golf academy and then go on to become a professional golfer.

"He has done so well in just a short time I think a lot of people think he's going to make it but it's a long journey."

Dedication is the name of the game for Worcester resident James who, when not studying for his GCSEs at the Briar Mill school, spends every spare hour on the golf course.

"He is devoted his life to it," Mr Newman said. "He plays seven days a week and he's totally dedicated.

"He tries to do his homework first and then go out."
