THE Post Office says the branches it proposes to close in Batchley and Abbeydale are poorly used and have suffered under-investment.

Last week, it was announced the two branches had been added to a list of other offices in North Worcestershire which it wanted to shut.

But the Post Office has stressed no decisions will be made until consultation with residents ends in November.

Customers using the Abbeydale branch in Woodfield Close will be expected to use the Church Hill branch 1.5 miles away or the town centre branch a mile away.

Those in Batchley will be expected to use the Webheath branch 1.4 miles away or the town branch, 1.3 miles away.

Head of area Paul Maisey said: "All of the branches we propose to close are poorly used, have suffered from under-investment and many are located in premises that are too small.

"In each case the sub-postmaster is unable to invest in the branch because of lack of profit available from running the business.

"There are reasonable public transport links, many of which are direct, to at least one of the alternative branches located in much more vibrant shopping areas."

Mr Maisey added: "Before we make a final decision we want to hear of any comments customers and others might have about the detailed plans and about the services provided by our alternative branches.

"I would ask people write to me, by 10 November 2004, c/o National Consultation Team, PO Box 2060, WATFORD, WD18 8ZW.

"No final decision will be taken until we have considered all views."

Last week, Redditch MP Jacqui Smith vowed to start a campaign to try to save the branches.
