A REDDITCH household waste site is to turn green as part of a pilot recycling scheme.

The initiative, which is piloted by Severn Trent Waste Services at the Crossgates Road site, will undergo a six-month trial period and will see extra staff on hand to help residents sort their recyclable waste.

Severn Trent Waste's operations director, John Lashley, said there was a growing need to recycle rubbish, with only 31 per cent of refuse being currently put into the recycling facilities in Redditch.

He said the remainder of rubbish was dumped into the general waste skip which goes to landfill.

He added: "Our aim is to recycle 50 per cent of refuse, so we need to recycle more materials which are currently dumped as 'rubbish'."

Facilities at the household waste accommodate 15 different recyclable materials, including a new opportunity to recycle wood and items made from multiple materials can be broken up and placed in the appropriate container.

"We believe the public wants to do more to help the environment - but may need a little more help to know what can and can't be recycled here," said Mr Lashley.

"That's why we are launching this trial, with increased manning levels to help visitors make the best use of the site."
