POLICE believe they know the identity of the elderly man found dead in a blazing car in a field off Alvechurch Highway - even though he has not yet been formally identified.

Checks carried out in Bromsgrove last Saturday, exactly a week after fire crews made the discovery, proved fruitless for detectives, who are still waiting for DNA evidence to confirm his identity.

Checks were carried out at Alvechurch Highway and Morrisons petrol station at Aston Fields where police think the man visited shortly before his death because of investigations and CCTV footage.

Detective Inspector Paul Williamson, of Bromsgrove CID, said: "Although the man is still to be formally identified, we believe we know who he is and have been working with his family since he was found."

However, police are still trying to establish why the man died, and are still treating his death as unexplained.

CCTV footage shows the elderly man, believed to be of Greek-Cypriot origin, smartly dressed, and driving a Citroen C5, registration VU03 JVH.

The car was filmed on the forecourt of Morrisons at around 8.30am on Saturday, September 25.

Police are appealing for the driver of a white minibus, filling up next to him, to get in contact.

Anyone with information or anyone who visits the garage on Saturdays, but did not go to the anniversary checks, are also asked to contact Bromsgrove CID on 08457 444888.
