WITH the onset of winter, Bromsgrove residents aged 65 and over are being urged to get a free flu jab.

The annual Department of Health flu immunisation campaign was launched in Bromsgrove on Monday. Townsfolk who fall into the 'at risk' category are now being urged to visit their GP surgery.

Those at risk include anyone with asthma, diabetes, a chronic heart, chest or kidney condition, or any other serious illness, as well as all people aged 65 or over. The vaccination takes two minutes and is safe, painless and effective.

Others who qualify include those with lowered immunity due to HIV, steroid medication or cancer treatment, or people in long-stay residential or nursing homes.

Flu is an unpleasant experience for anybody but for some it can lead to more serious illnesses, including bronchitis or pneumonia, and could result in hospitalisation or even death.

Vicky Preece, district nurse and vice chairman of the Redditch and Bromsgrove Primary Care Trust professional executive committee, said: "After a series of mild winters, it is easy to be complacent about the threat of flu but few realise that between 3,000 and 4,000 deaths are attributable to the complications of flu each year.

"We are urging those at risk to get a flu jab - even if they had one last year. The influenza virus is always changing, so last year's vaccine won't protect you now," she added.
