THE St John's Landmark Appeal scored a big hit when it swung into action to stage its annual fundraising golf day.

The tournament, held at Bromsgrove Golf Centre last Wednesday, was entitled "Fizz Bang!" as it began at 7.30am with a bucks fizz breakfast and all eight teams teeing off at the same time on a shotgun start.

The event raised more than £1,500 for the appeal, which has a target of £1m to repair the historic Bromsgrove Parish Church and rebuild the organ.

Everyone enjoyed an excellent morning's golf, which was followed by a three course lunch.

The tournament's first prize was awarded to the team from Birmingham-based Crawford and Company, with second place being taken by Zurich Insurance.

A team from Bromsgrove estate agents A Victor Powell picked up a prize after winning the yellow ball competition.

Regal Garage, in Worcester Road, Bromsgrove, sponsored the "nearest the pin" competition, which was played on the 11th hole and won by Janet Slade. She is the wife of appeal chairman David Slade, from Kidderminster Road.

The longest drive competition was won by Mac Taylor, from Bromsgrove.

Appeal co-ordinator Jo Slade said: "We were extremely grateful to everyone who entered a team and to the event sponsors Regal Garage and Thompson and Bryan for their support. It was another successful event for the appeal, which raised in excess of £1,500"

The tournament was supervised by Stoke Heath-based PGA professional Neil Selwyn-Smith from Golf by Design. Neil gave his time to the appeal for the second year running.
