DEAR EDITOR - May I respond to the recent letter from J Bourne regarding the proposed High Street feature. I entirely agree that we do not need another clock in the High Street. The model, displayed for two weeks in the library, has no clock face.

To suggest that there is a sum of money available, for this or some other project, to be determined by the town or district council, is quite misleading. This is a community project and if it is to succeed the money will have to be raised by grants, donations, sponsorship etc.

The High Street location proposed is one of the most significant historic sites in the town. This was where the ancient Salt Exchange, as depicted in the town crest, was situated.

This feature is not just intended as a valuable tourist attraction. We aim to create a symbolic feature to ensure that this bit of heritage is properly highlighted for future generations.
