DANNY McDonnell has been relishing his time with England's National Game XI squad and picking up some valuable goalkeeping tips.

Worcester City's player of the season is lapping up the opportunity of specialist training with England coach Mike Kelly as well as working with Hereford United's keeper Matt Baker.

For the last week McDonnell has been camped in Scotland, just north of Aberdeen, in a Hilton Hotel as England defend their Four Nations title and, apart from the cold, "it's freezing" moaned the 31-year-old, admits he's enjoying the whole experience.

He made his England debut in Thursday's 2-0 defeat against Wales.

"It's been fantastic," said McDonnell. "We're being treated really well, almost like royalty and the training has been really good.

"The lads have been great and made me feel really welcome.

"They've got an excellent goalkeeping coach in Mike Kelly and the main thing for me is to get something out of this week and I am.

"Matt's a good goalkeeper and I enjoy working with him. "I'm obviously number two but I still want to make the most of it and I've picked things up which will be useful.

"At Worcester we obviously don't get a specialist training so this has been really beneficial and I've been working on some technical stuff that will hopefully make me a better keeper."

England round off the defence of their Four Nations title with a clash against Scotland tomorrow and McDonnell will be hoping to play some part in that after his appearance against Wales.

However, his hopes of representing England against Iraq in their goodwill tour match at Macclesfield Town next Thursday look to be in doubt with news he requires hospital treatment for a niggling shoulder injury.

It also means he will miss out on a possible trip to America for a match in Charleston on June 9.

"Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be available for either of those because of this shoulder problem," he said.

"I put off having treatment to come up to Scotland but I do need to get it sorted in time for the season because it's likely to take around a month of phsyio to fully recover," said McDonnell.

Meanwhile, City manager John Barton and new coach John Snape are expected to attend a supporters club fans' forum at St George's Lane on Monday, starting at 7.30pm.
