THE Malvern United Angling Association's spring league has now switched from Sunday to Wednesday evenings for the remainder of contests.

The club held 'a silver fish only' contest after the last Sunday match for fun as it would not count towards the spring league points.

The idea of the contest is to target the smaller species resident in the pool such as skimmers, rudd, roach, tench and perch and try to avoid the hungry carp.

This proved to be more difficult for some but made for an enjoyable afternoon none the less.

Ian Goddard took first place, netting 2-5-0 from peg 8. Ian used pole tactics to take a nice bag of skimmers, roach and perch.

In second spot was Neil Humpage on peg 6, Neil alternated between the waggler and open end feeder to take 1-12-0. Neil also managed to land two carp on light tackle which unfortunately didn't count.

When Mike Spragg drew peg 20, near to the island, he thought he may have trouble with the odd carp intercepting his bait intended for smaller quarry, but as it turned out he ended up playing carp for most of the contest, finally landing six.

In between this he also managed to land 1-9-0 of roach, rudd and perch using a groundbait feeder which gave him third place.

It was a frustrating day for John Shaw who landed a fabulous common carp on light tackle which tipped the scales at 9-0-0 and on any other day would have counted.

The first Wednesday evening contest of the spring league took place last week and was well attended.

Worcester match star Paul Bick returned to his old stamping ground and took first place with four carp and two roach taken on the pole in the margins from peg 17. His total winning weight was 11-0-0 adjusted to 4-2-0.

Neil Humpage was in the points again, this time drawn on peg 13 he used the far end reeds to his advantage taking three carp from there on the pole but losing two for a total weight of 7-0-0 adjusted to 3-0-0 for second place.

John Cooper drew peg 19 and set his stall out for silver fish on the pole and had caught steadily when a carp took his maggot hookbait and gave a good account of itself on light tackle. John eventually landed it and it gave him a total weight of 3-14-0 adjusted to 1-11-0.

Fourth spot went to Ian Goddard who drew peg 3. Despite fishing a legered hookbait close to the island, Ian failed to get the carp in feeding mood and only managed one for 2-4-0 along with some silver fish for an adjusted weight of 1-6-0.

The Spring league continues next Wednesday, draw 6pm at the pool.
