CAMPAIGNING residents in Alcester Heath are jubilant this week after Warwickshire County Council agreed to put safety measures in place on the busy B4090 which runs past their homes.

Double white lines will be painted on the hill crests to make overtaking illegal and other planned measures include "SLOW" signs and possible mobile speed cameras.

They will be paid for out of the county council's Local Safety Scheme budget.

The council's decision was influenced by discussions and contributions from residents and a detailed examination of recorded injury accidents.

Residents discussed the measures at a meeting with councillors and county road safety engineer Malcolm Graham recently as part of an increased campaign following an accident at the end of March, when two people died.

On behalf of the residents, Jayne Roberts said: "I'm very happy with the decision and feel with all parties working together, we have achieved a very satisfactory outcome.

"My hope is that motorists will also work with us and respect what is a very deceptive road.

"They have agreed to everything we asked for but the only downside is we haven't got a date on it."

Councillor Susan Juned said: "I'm very pleased these proposals will include the new white lining, signs and possible mobile speed cameras which residents have asked for.

"I hope this will prevent future accidents by warning drivers of the hazards of this road and by enforcing speed limits."

Mr Graham said: "Although the accident record on Alcester Heath is similar to comparable roads in Warwickshire, there is evidence of increasing speeds and severity of accidents.

"Work will start as soon as possible and we'd like to thank residents for their helpful contributions."
