DROITWICH MP Peter Luff has won praise for his commitment to energy efficiency.

Mr Luff has shown his support by backing a House of Commons motion calling on the Government to set a firm target for energy efficiency which will support national targets for reducing dangerous carbon dioxide emissions.

It will also help prevent cold-related deaths in the winter.

The Sustainable Energy Act 2003, supported by MPs of all parties, requires the Secretary of State to set an "energy efficiency aim" for homes.

The UK Government's energy efficiency minister, Lord Whitty recently confirmed to Parliament the UK commitment to save five megatonnes of carbon each year from household energy efficiency by 2010.

MPS are now calling on the Government to give this UK target statutory back up by setting up it own energy efficiency aim.

Mr Luff said: "Saving energy is the best way of cutting fuel bills, reducing harmful green house gas emissions and preventing cold related deaths.

"It is vital the Government should set as the energy efficiency aim the achievement of five megatonnes of carbon savings per annum by 2010 for the UK, with an appropriate proportion for England."

The Sustainable Energy Partnership, a broad coalition of business, trade and social and environmental organisations has welcomed his stand.

Spokesman, Andrew Warren said: "Peter Luff is to be congratulated for the public support for energy efficiency.

"More and more MPs agree the Energy Efficiency Aim should enshrine the UK commitment to saving five megatonnes of carbon savings per annum by 2010 for the UK energy efficiency."
