ON June 6 we will remember the Allied Landings in Normandy in 1944 - 60 years ago.

Four days later many of us will cast our vote for the same cause in the Euro Elections. That is, we will vote to keep Britain an independent country.

Since 1973 successive administrations, both Labour and Conservative, have signed a number of treaties and each time a bit more of our independence has been lost as powers have been transferred from Britain to Brussels.

The Liberal Democrats have not had the opportunity but are actually more keen than Labour. It will be difficult to recognise the moment when we cease to be English, or British and become European citizens because the process is so gradual, but we are well down the road to losing those freedoms for which former generations risked their lives 60 years ago.

Even this letter could be against laws to be introduced by means of the proposed EU constitution. Freedom of expression is under threat, if the views are anti-EU or xenophobic.

On June 10 we will vote to elect MPs to the parliament in Brussels. The results are determined by proportional representation, instead of the usual first past the post system, so every vote can make a difference. It's a good opportunity to vote to stay independent.
