BROMSGROVE Cricket Club First XI finally got their Birmingham and District Division One season off the ground with a winning draw at St Godwald's Park.

Wolverhampton pushed the Boars, who have had their last two league games called off due to rain, to the last ball last Saturday.

The margin was just four runs as Bromsgrove secured the winning draw, taking 14 points to Wolves' 8.

Skipper Nick Davies said: "It was a close game. Everybody contributed and we stuck to the task well. We fielded superbly. Wolves pushed us all the way but they were always slightly behind the rate so I was always quietly confident."

Davies won the toss and elected to bat first but his side was soon in trouble when Julian Court (3) was caught by Lycett.

Nick Edwards (3) and Paul Duffy (2) soon followed, leaving the Boars wobbling on 30-3.

Davies (52) held the side together, well supported by Jamie Campbell (26), Nick Reade (20) and Mark Evenson (26).

The Boars were dismissed with the last ball of the innings, posting 175.

An early breakthrough in reply eluded the hosts as Wolves put on 35 for the first wicket. Nick Husbands and Kish Patel took a wicket each in successive overs to bring the game back under control.

Vaidya and Lycett steadily clocked up the runs for Wolves before Lycett (28) was bowled by Jon Farrow but Bradford (28) took over.

The Boars kept their nerve late on to take crucial wickets. Wolves needed 16 runs needed from two overs but a tight over from Patel (3-39) and another from Farrow, including a wicket off the final ball, sealed the winning draw.

Bromsgrove set up a National Knockout third round tie at Cannock this Sunday with a comfortable 48-run victory over Gloucestershire side Hatherley and Reddings last Sunday.

Evenson top scored with an excellent 57 not out in a partnership with newcomer Sean Jackson, while Davies smashed a quickfire 38. Jordan Rose fell just short of a half century as the Boars totalled 223 off 45 overs.

Hatherley's reply never really got going against some accurate bowling. Evenson took three wickets, aided by tight spells from Campbell and Patel.

l A huge Steve Chinn six secured a win for Bromsgrove against Redditch in the Worcestershire Sunday League.

Chasing 200, the Boars won with a ball to spare thanks to Chinn's undefeated half century.
