A PUB landlord has pinned his hopes on flying the flag for England by selling red rose badges in aid of a true British charity to mark St George's Day.

After a survey revealed that only one in 10 knew Friday was the patron saint's day, Darren Barson, of Spetchley's Nightingale Inn, near Worcester, decided to change that.

He commissioned special red rose lapel badges, which he plans to give away to drinkers, with donations going to the Royal British Legion.

Anyone who wears a badge or a real red rose to the inn on St George's Day will be invited to enter a draw to win a English Sunday roast for four.

Mr Barson said that, as a traditional English inn, he felt it was right to promote St George's Day and encourage others to make more of it.

"It would be great to see people walking around on April 23 with a rose symbol adorning them."
