A SYMBOLIC break from tradition will mark a new chapter for the Worcester Diocese, with a novel welcome for a new chaplain.
The agriculture and rural life chaplain, the Rev Robert Barlow will be commissioned and licensed at Worcester's Livestock Market tonight.
Because his role is centred in the heart of the rural community, an agricultural location seemed more appropriate than a church.
Mr Barlow, formerly of the Peterborough Diocese, will be stepping into the shoes of the Rev John Willis, who retired last year.
Unusual
He will be the first chaplain to be licensed in such an unusual fashion.
"It's a sign that the church needs to be where the people are, rather than expecting people to come to where the church is," said Mr Barlow.
"I will try to continue to make churches aware of the needs of the rural community and how to respond to them."
