WORCESTER Nomads CC Junior section held a presentation evening last Friday at the Fownes Hotel in Worcester where they held a quiz and gave out their trophies for the 2003 season.

Overall the club had won the Bob Bradbury six-a-side trophy for U13s, the Bedford Shield or County U14 Championship as well as the Malvern eight-a-side fun day. Older teams won the South Worcestershire U16 league and the U17s won the Ryan Birt County U17 trophy beating Himley in the final.

The Ryan Birt trophy for the outstanding junior player of the season was awarded to Nathan Newport. He had a truly outstanding year not just for the junior under 14, 16 and 17 teams but also, after school commitments were completed, he scored his first senior century for 2nd XI and two half centuries for the 1st XI.

Last month, Nathan was awarded the Alec Hastilow trophy for the outstanding U16 player for the Midlands and he is presently attending squad practices for England U15s for this year, hoping to follow in the footsteps of his father, Phil.

Presenting the trophy to Nathan, Bob Carter, Nomads junior chairman and himself a former Worcestershire legend, praised Nathan's dedication to all the forms of cricket he played.

The other main trophies were awarded to Dominic Harris, who won the Underwoods Cup for most improved player for 2003 after, not only several outstanding performances with bat and ball for the under 16s, but also distinguishing himself in senior cricket, notably in an 80-run 8th wicket partnership with Nomads second XI vice-captain Nick Williams to win a thrilling league encounter with Brockhampton.

The third all round award went to Tom Marsh, who won the Terry Birt Cup for fielding. Terry commented that the standard was very high but that Tom had frequently left opponents gasping as they saw how quickly he covered the ground in returning the ball and he was a very worthy winner.

There were age group winners in the categories of batting, bowling and fielding for all the teams from U10s to U16s as follows:

U10: Andrew Curtis, Alex Williams and James Doorbar. U11: Alex Claytor, Max Barbour and Tom Mills. U12: James Smith, Tom Malone and Jack Watkins. U13: James Smith, Steve Webb and Tom Bryant. U14a: Tom Brain, Robert Allen and Josh Stafford. U14b: Chris Goodreds, James Fredericks and Jon Inglis. U15: Tom Vale, James Lyons and Marcus Claytor. U16: Liam O'Driscoll, Miles Illingworth and Guy Davies.

Commenting on the U16 trophies, Terry Birt said that there were several other talented players at this age group including two, Guy Broadfield and Tom Marsh, who each scored a century in the same 20 overs match last season which was a new record for the league.

Lastly, despite not presenting trophies to the under 17 age group, who only compete in a KO competition, the club wanted to recognise the extra special achievements of one player and presented a special award to Kieran Rees. He had starred in the Nomads junior and senior teams over nine years since the age of nine. Despite now playing senior matches for Barnt Green 1st XI in the Birmingham League, last year he found time to captain Nomads under 17s in their four KO Cup matches, scoring centuries in three of them.
