SECURITY was tight in Malvern 25 years ago when William Whitelaw, deputy leader of the Conservative Party, visited the Foley Arms Hotel to address local Tories.
Precautions included thorough checks on all hotel staff and guests, a search of nearby properties and the deployment of officers on the roofs of nearby buildings as look-outs.
The tight security was due to the fact that Mr Whitelaw had previously been Ulster Secretary, and that fellow Conservative Airey Neave had recently been murdered by the IRA in London.
