MALVERN Town Reserves met a committed Feckenham Reserves side in the Evesham Hospital Cup final on a mild evening at Common Road.

FECKENHAM RESERVES 0, MALVERN TOWN RESERVES 2

With about half an hour gone Joe Leighton chased a through ball and, as the Feckenham goalie came quickly off his line, the two players collided. Leighton got to his feet first and lobbed the goalie to give Rob Perrins the easiest of headers to open the scoring.

Adam Simpson, Mike Roberts and Simon Baker worked tirelessly in defence and Town keeper Peter Nightingale was seldom troubled and when he was required, he gave a faultless display in goal.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, a Baker free kick found Leighton in space and he in turn crossed from the bye-line for Perrins to head back and John Fryer hammered the ball home from close range.

Five minutes later Barry Hughes almost added to the score but his shot went inches wide of the upright. Hughes then dribbled the ball into the 18 yard box and was tripped from behind. Perrins stepped up to take the resultant penalty and despite hitting the ball hard and low, the Feckenham goalie pulled off a brilliant save.

The Feckenham goalkeeper was called into action once more as he saved at point blank range a powerfully struck header by Hughes.

With time running out Ed Lyons went on a darting run and got tripped just outside the box. Lyons took the free kick himself and with the goalie being caught flat footed, the ball ricocheted off the crossbar to safety.

This is the first piece of silverware Town have won this season and with both the first team and youth side still in cup action, there is hope of more to come soon.

Town U18s reached the final of the HFA Giantkillers Cup, when they defeated the Hereford Lads Club 2-1 (aet) at the Langland Stadium on Thursday night.
