THE work of a Ledbury composer will be performed alongside music by Elgar during a concert taking place as part of the town's English Festival.

John Frith's composition The Promenaders, an example of English pastoral music, will be performed by Tarrington Brass, which commissioned the piece, at a concert in St Michael's Church at 7.30pm on April 24.

This will be joined by a performance of Edward Elgar's The Music Makers by the Ledbury Choral Society.

Described as 'a moving and heartfelt work', the cantata is based on a poem by Arthur O'Shaughnessy and was first performed in 1912.

It incorporates quotations from other works, such as The Enigma Variations, The Dream of Gerontius and Sea Pictures.

The concert will feature a performance of Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry's I Was Glad and further contributions from Tarrington Brass and the Newent Choral Society with Sue Black, a mezzo soprano.

Tickets for the event, which cost £7.50 to include a glass of wine and £5 for under 16s, are available from Ledbury Tourist Information.
