THE inaugural Worcestershire Golf Club's captain's tournament, postponed from a few weeks ago when the course was covered in snow, took place in glorious spring weather.

The event consisted of a Stableford Competition with teams of four players; the best two players scores to count on each hole.

In order to accommodate the large number of players wishing to compete, the captain decided on two shotgun starts, one in the morning and a second in the afternoon. In total 144 members entered the competition.

In the morning competition, the team of Vic Hammond, Alan Taylor, Dave Kyte and Rob King amassed 79 points to take first place. In second place was a team of only three golfers as their fourth member failed to appear. The three senior golfers, John Farley, Fred Wortley and Dave Leccese performed heroically and scored 77 points. With one player short, their achievement was outstanding.

In third place, with a score of 75 points, was the team of John Duncan, Mark Wright, Dave Wilkinson and Nigel Teale.

The scoring in the afternoon competition was of a much higher order than those who competed in the morning event.

Although scoring seven points more than the winners of the morning competition, Charles Davenport, Roger Blackwell, Scott Mullington and Richard Kay had to be content with third place. Scoring 89 points, to obtain second place, was the team of John Rooney, Neil Smith, Simon Eales and Andy Dunster.

The most outstanding performance of the day however was that of the team of Dave Harding, Dave Farrell, Charles Curtis and Dave Turner. They amassed a total of 91 points to take first place.

In The Royal National Lifeboat Competition, scoring was of a high order. In winning Division One Tony Beale scored 39 points. Division Two was won by Derek Phillips with 36 points and Jim Wilde won Division Three with the best score of the day, 41 points. As a result of the competition, a cheque of £258 has been sent to RNLI for its funds.

Former Lady Captain Kate Foster won Division One of the Ladies' Stableford Competition with a score of 31 points. Pauline Belsham and Betty Hakes also scored 31 points but were placed second and third respectively on the count-back system.

Trina Smith won Division Two with 37 points, the same score as Jenny Bunyan who was placed second.

In the Australian Spoons Competition Audrey Emery and Ann Read ran out the winners with Doreen Hunt and Maureen Riley in second place.

In the Non-qualifying Stableford Competition, the Silver Division was won by June Jones, with Liz Lewis the runner up. Both players scored 37 points.

Twelve matches were evenly fought when the Ladies entertained the Seniors for their first match of the season.

The competition was a Greensome Stableford Competition with the winners of each match being the pair who had the highest Stableford score on completion of their 18 holes.

Most of the 12 games were close encounters, but the seniors ran out winners by 8.5 matches to 3.5. The Ladies won one of the matches by an outrageous 15 points. June Jones and Sheila Evans were the two ladies who beat their two senior opponents, who shall remain nameless, by this large margin. It was almost ungentlemanly conduct.
