ENSURING a repeat performance of Upton's success in a national competition will be the focus of an event set to take place next week.

The town took part in the Heart of England in Bloom competition for the first time last year and managed to scoop an unexpected gold.

Now organisers of Upton's entry in the large village category are working to ensure it maintains its position.

A committee made up of residents, councillors and horticultural experts has been meeting since October to discuss this year's entry and will hold an event to launch their plans on Sunday, April 25.

Organisers began planting daffodils at the entrances to the town late last year with the help of pupils from Upton CE Primary School.

They hope to introduce three flower-filled boats, along with tubs and hanging baskets, thoughout the town.

Local businesses Walton Marine, The Map Shop and Midland Communications have agreed to provide sponsorship and organisers hope more will come forward.

A Heart of England in Bloom judge will attend the launch event to hear the committee's proposals, along with the organiser for the Midlands area, who will offer advice.

Committee member Bill Dovey, said: "We hope to improve on what we had last year as it was all done very quickly. We're hoping all shopkeepers will have hanging baskets and everyone will get involved."

The launch begins on the MV Conway Castle at 11.15am and finishes at 2.30pm, incorporating a cruise down the Severn. Everyone is welcome to attend.
