THE members of a Worcester social club will be spending more than a penny when they use a £300 cash gift to upgrade their toilets!

The Heenan & Froude Social Club, in Sansome Place, wrote to the Making a Difference campaign to ask for help with the work, as at the moment the members are having to climb two sets of stairs to reach their old, dilapidated facilities.

The Making a Difference campaign, run by the Evening News and Worcester Round Table, gives out £1,000 each month to community clubs, groups and organisations.

Now the Heenan & Froude Social Club's 300 members are busily preparing to build a new, disabled toilet and revamp the gents and ladies at a total cost of £1,300.

The club - which was originally a social club for Heenan & Froude workers but broke away from the engineering firm about 20 years ago - has already raised £700.

"We held a fun day in November with lots of different activities, including cake stalls, a jumble stall, skittles, hook-a-duck and guess the treasure," said Diane Houghton, club secretary.

"But we needed a bit more help, and we saw the advert for Making a Difference and wondered if we could have some help - so it was wonderful when we found out we'd been warded the cash. We're all so pleased because we can start getting the work done.

"The toilets are in quite a bad way anyway - we are going to revamp the old ones as well as build new disabled toilets."

The club, which has a bar, is open every evening from 7pm to 11pm and on Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes, from 12pm to 3pm.

Activities include skittles, snooker, dominoes, cribbage and billiards.

On Saturday nights there is usually live entertainment and bingo sessions are held on Sundays. There is also a function room available to hire for parties, for £25.

New members are "always welcome".
