A DARING Evening News employee is to take part in a sponsored zip wire slide to raise cash to help fellow flood victims like his family.

In 2000, Andy Churchill's semi-detached house in Hylton Road, St John's, Worcester, was severely flooded.

Mr Churchill, who is celebrating his 43rd birthday today, had enjoyed living in his home for 20 years without flooding.

However, just six weeks after he got married, the house was twice hit by severe flooding, ruining the newly-decorated ground floor of his property.

Mr Churchill, his wife, and two stepdaughters had to share a bedroom in his parents' house for a month before temporarily moving into a rented house for a further six months, after which they finally moved back home and started rebuilding their lives.

So, knowing at first hand the devastating consequences of flooding, and having watched the hard work of the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA), which helps rescue people trapped in their flooded homes, he decided to help the charity.

Mr Churchill could think of no better way than help raise funds for SARA than by taking part in a sponsored zip wire slide across Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

Mr Churchill will start his zip wire slide hovering 200ft at the top of the stadium before launching himself off, racing down the wire to the other side of the arena.

Sponsored challenge

"We never needed help from SARA ourselves but they do such good work and you never know we may need them one say, so I thought that I would do a sponsored challenge to give them something back for everything they have done," he said.

"Being flooded is a nightmare experience and knowing there's someone on hand to help is of great comfort."

And Mr Churchill, a computer scanner operator, is no stranger to challenges.

He has completed a host of activities, including the world's highest bungee jump and a free-fall parachute jump - all in the name of charity.

Mr Churchill, who will complete the zip wire slide feat at 1.30pm on Sunday, has managed to raise £130 in sponsorship so far.
