TRAFFIC will be restricted on the main bridge in Upton-upon-Severn this week as repair works begin.
A routine inspection by Worcestershire County Council revealed serious problems with the flood viaduct between the main bridge and the access route into the marina.
Engineers will be urgently assessing the viaduct during coming weeks to determine the extent of the repairs needed.
The bridge will be closed today and tomorrow between 11am-4pm, as width restrictions are put in place.
After that, traffic lights will restrict the flow of traffic to one direction at a time for the foreseeable future.
The viaduct is also subject to a three-ton weight restriction. Buses and lorries will be diverted.
"The viaduct has serious structural problems that we are tackling as quickly as we can," said county council highways chief Paul Jameson.
"We are conscious of the inconvenience this will cause but we will do all we can to minimise the extent of this."
