BOY racers and aggressive drivers have made a street so dangerous it is only a matter of time before someone is killed, residents say.

Homeowners in Ambleside Drive, Warndon, Worcester, say they are "sick and tired" of speeding traffic, blocked driveways and abusive drivers.

They say the problem has become so bad that house-buyers are being put off properties along the road.

Retired district nurse Joyce McFarlane, aged 46, was the victim of a torrent of racial abuse when she approached a driver who had blocked her drive with his car.

He attempted to open the door to hit her when a neighbour intervened, she said.

"This morning, I was nearly knocked over and had to jump out the way," she said. "We can't even sell our homes. No one will live with this traffic."

Pensioner Les Jones, 73, claims he has witnessed scores of accidents and seen youths racing their cars side-by-side down the road.

Housewife Susan Owens, 47, is sick of the abuse she encounters when parking her car and claims impatient motorists are aggressive and intimidating.

"The situation is horrendous," she said.

Last month, the road's residents presented a petition to the City and County Council Transportation Forum, demanding action.

Tom Comerford, senior engineer in traffic management for the Worcester Transportation Partnership, said they were aware of the problems but did not have the funding to deal with the situation.

"We've applied for funding for a scheme and we're carrying out initial investigations that will indicate the options that are possible," he said.

An automatic traffic counter has been installed on the road to measure the speed and volume of traffic, he added.
