REFEREE Russell Green left both managers seeing red after last Saturday's Dr Martens league clash at Common Road, writes Mervyn Collins.

Evesham United boss Dave Busst was fuming over the Gloucester official's decision to send off skipper Lee Knight, while he also felt Redditch's Gary Knight had been similarly hard done by.

"Yes, he was the last man when he brought Craig down but we had been given a penalty and a yellow card would have been sufficient," the Evesham manager said.

"All he was doing when he sent off Lee was evening things up and that can't be right. Rod (Brown) was just as angry as I was about his handling of the game but the referee was having none of it after the game."

By the letter of the law, the visiting defender had to be red-carded, while the Evesham captain's challenge deserved no more than a caution especially as it was his first foul of the game.

Knight was involved in heated exchanges with visiting fans as he headed for the dressing room, hardly surprising since the Evesham skipper is a former Valley Stadium player.

It proved a sorry return to Common Road for Mark Shepherd and Richard Leadbeater, who have struck 20 times between them this league season.

The former never had a sniff in front of goal, while his Redditch striking colleague spent the afternoon warming the bench.

Evesham's former Redditch connection, Lee Ross, was another who didn't make it on to the pitch as he served a one-match ban for his sending off at Swindon on New Year's Day.

However, Ross, who has notched 11 goals in the Western Division this season, is set to face another of his former cubs when the Robins visit Halesowen Town tomorrow.

The striker is enjoying a new lease of life at Common Road, having found the net five times in five outings and he had a little dig at old Redditch boss Brown after the game.

"Rod said that I wasn't fit and that's why he wasn't picking me regularly," Ross revealed. "But, Scott Voice is certainly overweight and far from fit judging by today's showing, so Rod's comments don't make sense."

Ross, and his Common Road teammates, will be up against the section's top scorer at The Grove tomorrow in the shape of Jason Ashby who took his league tally to 17 last weekend as The Yeltz hammered Swindon Supermarine 6-1.
