REUBEN Spiring and Ryan Driver are the chief candidates to replace Graeme Hick in the PPP healthcare County Championship Division Two clash with Sussex at Hove, starting tomorrow.
Spiring is fit again after missing last week's victory over Middlesex, having had fluid drained from his troublesome knee which has required six operations.
But he could face competition from the promising 21-year-old Driver, who is on a week off from university. Spinner Matt Rawnsley is also in contention.
Steve Rhodes will captain the side with Hick on England duty in the first Test against Zimbabwe at Lord's.
The County have named the same squad as for today's floodlit National League Division One clash between the two counties, although the starting 11 will not be finalised until tomorrow.
Coach Bill Athey said: "It depends on what type of wicket has been prepared. It is a matter of keeping our options open."
Athey is hoping the County can build on their seven-wicket victory over Middlesex which lifted them into fifth place.
Athey said: "We played pretty well in that game with two great innings, one from Elliott Wilson and one from Graeme Hick.
