The decision of Malvern Town Council to retain the stakes, rather than remove or lay flat the offending headstones at Great Malvern cemetery, is no doubt the right one, bearing in mind the cost and other possible consequences, but it is unlikely the council envisaged, as it set forth on its crusade to bring safety to a site where no danger lurked, that the result would be over 700 monuments to its own impetuousness.

One monument that can and should be replaced, however, is the eyesore that greets visitors as they enter through the main gateway.

I refer to the large rusty skip, which has been located at the grave-diggers work area for many years. One would have difficulty finding a skip of such dilapidated appearance on a building site.
