SIX new jobs will be created when a private operator takes over the running of the residential care unit at Bromyard's Froome Bank Hospital.

Shaw Healthcare takes over the operation of the unit from Herefordshire Council on April 5, as part of a deal that means it will run a number of care units in the county.

Although Shaw will run the care unit at Froome Bank, Herefordshire Primary Care Trust will continue to run the rest of the hospital.

Stephen Crisp, marketing and development manager for Shaw, said the company was advertising for care staff.

"Prior to the take-over the council held back from recruiting staff," he said.

"We've just started up a major recruitment campaign to enhance staffing levels."

Shaw's contract with Herefordshire Council includes Leadon Bank home for the elderly in Ledbury, which will be demolished and rebuilt to create special flats for residents.

The changes in Bromyard will not be as significant, although Mr Crisp confirmed that the unit would undergo a full refurbishment.

He said Shaw was also looking to develop the unit's services, catering for elderly mentally infirm residents including personal care, sensory stimulation and "social input relevant to their clinical condition".

George Matthews, chairman of the Froome Bank Hospital League of Friends, which represents both the hospital and care unit, said the league had been happy with the way the council had run the home but was also impressed by Shaw.

"Mr Crisp told us what Shaw did and we were frankly surprised. They run a lot of homes and hospitals and have a great deal experience. They may have more experience than the council.

"He promised the home would be extremely well run and had a lot of ideas for the future. We'll just have to see what happens and hold Shaw to their promises."
