WHAT is all this about revitalising Great Malvern town centre by moving the post office and/or constructing a restaurant on the roof under some sort of glass dome? Once again Malvern planners demonstrate their unerring instinct for barking up the wrong tree.

For a start, the post office is rather a fine 1930s building which has a wonderfully solid old-fashioned feel about it (typifying Malvern?) and is always busy and well-used.

Where would a replacement post office be sited and how would it be an improvement on the existing arrangements?

The idea of putting a restaurant on the roof under a glass dome is just daft. It would destroy the integrity of the building by topping it with a structure that is reminiscent of any urban shopping mall and would provide Malvern with something it does not actually need.

Having taken the decision to go with Waitrose, which was probably a good move, the council then has to see the whole plan through, which was to encourage people to come to Malvern for a 'quality' experience.

Car parking is the obvious problem and the fact is that most Waitrose shoppers get everything they need there and do not spend much time anywhere else.

I still think Rosebank Gardens, which are gloomy, noisy and little used, would make an excellent car park, prominently sited just off the main through road. In the meantime the Belle Vue Terrace car park should be available for long-term parking so that visitors can go for a walk on the hills and then have time to explore the town, have lunch etc, rather than be forced to leave after two hours.

Church Street should be pedestrianised so people can enjoy the view of the Priory and the council has to find a way of encouraging and supporting small quality shops
