PLANS to regenerate Great Malvern were officially adopted by the district council this week.

The regeneration strategy, revealed in the Malvern Gazette three weeks ago, will now form the core of the council's efforts to breathe new life into the town centre.

The strategy was drawn up by the council's own economic development staff and has already been endorsed by the Town Centre Partnership Forum.

The forum is made up of representatives from the town, district and county councils, the traders' and tourism associations and The Malverns Experience.

Among the central proposals of the regeneration strategy is an ambitious redevelopment of the post office site and the creation of a new "Festival Square" on the car park above Somerfield.

The plan was endorsed unanimously at Tuesday's meeting of Malvern Hills District Council.

Priory ward member Coun Roger Hall-Jones said he was very pleased with the report, which he said built on the framework of the earlier town strategy, implemented successfully by MHDC in the 1990s under the leadership of John Ford.
