BEN Smith has today been unveiled as Worcestershire County Cricket Club's new captain.

The 30-year-old batsman, who joined the County from Leicestershire last year, succeeds Graeme Hick who had led the side for three seasons.

Smith is relishing the opportunity to lead the side to the pinnacle of the English game.

He said: "I am thrilled to have been given the honour of leading the County during what promises to be a very exciting period.

"I have settled into the club extremely well both on and off the pitch and am looking forward to building on the progress we made as a side last season.

"I know Graeme was disappointed not to continue in the job, but I have spoken to him and he has assured me I have his full support.

"I have no doubt he will continue to be a huge asset to the side as he has been throughout his career with the club."

Smith knows what it takes to compete at the highest level of the domestic game, having won two County Championship titles while at Leicestershire.

He made an immediate impact with County supporters following his move to New Road, racking up over 1,000 first-class runs in his first season and showing outstanding form in one-day cricket.

The County's Director of Cricket Tom Moody said: "I am confident Ben will take us to new heights and lead us with great success at New Road.

"The club feels that the time is right to move forward with the captaincy of the team and Ben has all the attributes as a leader to take us to the next level."

The County hope to make several signings before the start of next season, with one of the main priorities being to strengthen the pace attack following Alamgir Sheriyar's move to Kent.

Their plans also include making their two permitted overseas signings.
