A PLAQUE honouring the memory of renowned composer Sir Edward Elgar has been unveiled at Worcester's Cathedral Plaza.

The 4ft by 18ins plaque was unveiled at the site of the old Elgar Brothers Music shop, at 10 High Street, by the composer's great niece, Margaret Elgar, on Saturday.

Elgar, famous for the rousing Land of Hope and Glory, was born in Lower Broadheath.

The Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Gareth Jones, Councillor Robert Rowden, Andrew Neill, the chairman of the Elgar Society, Anthony Dove, director of Tops High Street Shops Ltd, and Hilary Elgar, Margaret's sister, attended the ceremony.

"There was a plaque on the old building but that was way up and could not be seen unless you knew where to look," said Mr Neill.

"The development gave us the opportunity to put it at a more noticeable level, and I have to say it is a very nice plaque."
