A MAN was sentenced to a day in jail after missing a court hearing because he over-slept.

Stephen Reeve, of Hop Kiln Gardens, Evesham, admitted to Worcester Magistrates Court yesterday that he breached his bail arrangement by failing to appear at the court on Thursday, January 22, when he was due to face a theft charge.

Reeve, aged 30, admitted to the charge of taking a Pot Noodle and a bag of sugar - worth a total of £2.05 - from One Stop Shop, in Evesham High Street, on Monday, January 19.

Barry Newton, defending, said Reeve has a drug problem and has difficulty sleeping. He woke up at lunchtime on the day of his scheduled court appearance after taking sleeping tablets.

He added that Reeve had taken the food because he had no money, and not because he wanted to sell it to fuel his drug habit.

Reeve was handed the jail sentence - which has already been served in remand - and ordered to pay £55 court costs for breaching his bail. He received a 12-month conditional discharge for the theft.
