RESIDENTS of Alcester were last week called on to sign a petition organised by the Liberal Democrats asking the government to 'Axe the Tax'.

Spokesman Councillor Susan Juned said: "Council tax is now the most unpopular tax in Britain today - because it's the most unfair tax."

Mrs Juned has been campaigning for a replacement since a Help the Aged report last September highlighted the impact council tax is having on pensioners and low income families.

"Council tax is an unfair tax that is costly to administer," said Mrs Juned. "The tax as a share of the basic state pension has been rising over the last 10 years.

"Last year, state pensions were increased by 2.6 per cent but council tax across the country increased by an average of 13 per cent and Stratford Council increased its tax by a massive 58 per cent."

The Liberal Democrats want to scrap council tax and replace it with a local income tax based on the ability to pay.
