THE Alcester branch of the Royal British Legion is celebrating after announcing it has once again broken all branch records by collecting over £11,500 during its 2003 Poppy Appeal.

The figure for last year stood at just over an impressive £10,000 and it was thought that this could not be beaten but fortunately, members' hard work has paid off.

The branch, which was formed in June 1921, is a very active and recognised team which carries on the Legion's work to provide financial, social and emotional support to those who have served - and are currently serving - in the Armed Services along with their dependants.

A spokesman said: "This year's generous total is a direct result of the commitment of our 'army' of branch members, poppy collectors and friends who work throughout the year to raise money.

"At least half the total raised was money collected from houses in the area.

"The branch would like to thank all its members and friends, especially the townsfolk and businesses of Alcester, for their hard work and generosity.

"We look forward to 'doing it again' for the 2004 Poppy Appeal."
