AN arson attack at a Woodrow school on Saturday evening could have led to several blocks being completely destroyed by fire.

A rubbish bin filled with waste was set alight and pushed against the front doors of Dingleside Middle School at about 8pm.

The blaze spread to the main building and three fire crews were called out.

Acting headteacher Paul Lifford said: "I was told the potential damage could have been severe and I could have lost my Year 5 and 6 blocks.

"It would have meant closing part of the school and the financial implications would have been huge."

The school doors were destroyed and the area inside will have to be completely redecorated because of smoke damage. Other classrooms were also smoke logged.

"We've been operating as normal. The whole school was spoken to first thing on Monday morning.

"They were told what had happened, what damage had been done, the potential damage there could have been and the fact it was a criminal act of arson," Mr Lifford said.

Police are investigating the fire as arson and are appealing for any witnesses to call them on 08457 444888.
