REDDITCH police have called for 'serious consideration' to be given to the design and materials used for a planned development in the town centre 'in light of the current terrorist threat'.

Kingfisher Centre owners Thornfield want to demolish Car Park 4 and build a multi-screen cinema and restaurants. The scheme is due to be debated by Redditch Council on Tuesday.

Crime risk manager Pc Stan Baker asked for a number of issues to be considered.

In a report to be discussed next week, he said: "In light of the current terrorist threat, serious consideration should be given to the design and material of the proposed development."

He raises concerns about the development acquiring secured car park status to reduce vehicle crime and fear of crime.

He also calls for restricted opening hours and the implementation of a dispersal plan for customers.

In the report town centre manager Jane Muckle says: "New leisure, food and drink venues are seen as essential in order to promote a new identity and image for the town centre and encourage more people to visit more often and stay longer."

Worcestershire County Council has asked Thornfield for a £300,000 contribution towards late-night public transport over a five-year period.
