SIX new CCTV cameras are to be installed in Redditch town centre, taking the total up to 20.

Redditch Council agreed to a support system, including cabling, for the new cameras at a full council meeting last week.

The cameras, which will be sited around the areas of Chicago Rock, the bus station and Time nightclub, will be operational in four to six weeks.

Council director of community services Barbara Webster said: "The CCTV system often provides important information to police officers on the ground and acts as a deterrent in the town centre.

"The cameras have also provided recorded evidence, which has proved vital in a number of cases.

"The use of these additional cameras will greatly expand and enhance this CCTV coverage in the town centre."
