IT was with great sadness that I read of the possible closure of the nursery assessment unit at Thornton House School.

Anyone who has been to the school and witnessed the ultimate dedication of the wonderful staff, the superb facilities and the happy children, could only stare in amazement at reports of its demise.

It cannot make sense to take children with special educational needs from a dedicated environment and put them in mainstream schools where the staff have neither the training nor the experience to cope with their individual difficulties.

It is rather like expecting all hospitals to have its own cardiac bypass unit; we know that is not an economic possibility and neither is it a sensible use of specialist medical manpower to have a special needs teacher in every school.
